Since the popularity of interactive shows such as Punchdrunk and You Me Bum Bum Train we have been regularly asked the question “What is immersive theatre?”  We find this exciting, especially when asked by brands, mainly because it gives us an indication that our client’s are seeking alternative ways to communicate their message to their consumer, opening their minds and suggesting a physical and immersive angle to their event.

The definition of immersive theatre states ‘Immersive theatre is a presentational or theatrical form or work that breaks the “fourth wall” that traditionally separates the performer from the audience both physically and verbally’. This explanation is rather vague and is very much open for interpretation, however it is exciting to consider that this type of work is breaking down a barrier and allowing a more personal experience and attachment that is real and tangible.

Our work is immersive in nature, not only because we get to create exciting event installations and bespoke design concepts, but because we often incorporate theatre into our ideas. This might be using a certain type of technical equipment, or something more physical in the form of an actor or dancer, as it is incredibly important for any LUX Technical event to be immersive so that the design feels authentic and entirely believable. The success of theatre is very similar to that of a magician – you are aware there are tricks involved, however you never want to know how it was done.

We encourage audience participation and enjoy opportunities to witness the blend of performer with the viewer, but we also appreciate the need for a sense of discovery within a theatrical experience. These shows are often personal adventures and you are encouraged to take away as much or as little of the narrative as you like. Our commitment to creating authentic work is again seen in the way that we build our sets, hang our drape and program our audiovisual equipment. It is always our promise to deliver the very best technical and creative solutions for our clients and a personal commitment to always do our very best to show the events industry the possibilities of what’s possible.

If you ever find yourselves at one of our immersive event experiences then we hope you feel inspired, swooning over how we pulled it off, curious about the tricks used, but above all left with a huge sense of amazement at the different experiences you will have witnessed.
