The brief

Stamford School is an English independent boys school, part of the Stamford Endowed Schools. The school is situated in the market town of Stamford in Lincolnshire.

LUX Technical was appointed by Stamford School’s bursar to work alongside the architects design and project management team. The brief was to design and install a bespoke, integrated AV solution for the refurbished school hall.

The Solution

The team at LUX supplied, installed and commissioned the lighting, audio, video and communication systems. This included dimmers, rigging, data-distribution, control, new lighting fixtures and audio equipment.

The system was designed to give Stamford School’s multipurpose hall and users as much flexibility as possible. However it was important to ensure that the systems would be easy to operate on a day to day basis. The hall is frequently used space. Therefore the system needs to be able to cope with assemblies, lectures, concerts, plays and musicals. The system needed to be easy to use and easily managed internally. As a result of the large variety of events, top level equipment was required.

Rigging

LUX Technical designed the rigging, to allow motorised trusses to be lowered into the hall. This therefore allowed for ease of day to day operation and maintenance. Internally wired bars ensured maximum flexibility when rigging lighting tungsten fixtures requiring dimmers or LED fixtures and Moving lights requiring switched circuits. The internally wired bars also include DMX data points, XLR audio connections and CAT 6 points. These could all be patched at ground level. The motors were installed above the ceiling within the roof space. LUX also rebuilt the existing walkways within the roof and installed new walkways. The new walkways allowed safe access for inspection and servicing of the motors. The trusses also enable a safe solution. They allowed students to rig and connect lighting fixtures at ground level removing the need for ladders.

LUX specified and supplied ETCs fantastic Source Four fixtures for the lighting rig. These included the iconic zoom profiles and new fresnels. They were accompanied with Phillips new e180 LED par fixtures. Our dimmers of choice were LSC’s Redback installation dimmers with modular switching banks. Due to the banks the LED fixtures and moving lights could be easily controlled.

Audio

Our audio solution comprised of the BOSE Room Match system, Power Match amplifiers and control space DSP. Working alongside BOSE we designed this system to ensure a controlled even coverage of the new retractable seating. Ease of use for day to day operation was achieved due to using the BOSE DSP and Control Space wall controller. This was pre programmed for microphone and local input control.

LUX installed custom facility panels around the room. The panels included mains and dimmer outlets, control points and patchable CAT 6 connectivity. They were designed so the hall could be used in different configurations. They also therefore allowed for operation from various positions easily.

At LUX we pride ourselves on turning complex installation requirements into practical user friendly solutions. This was the perfect example of this. Furthermore the school can now use the system well providing the perfect solution for their needs.
